I was at an art fair last weekend that was held in the community where I live. Not only were there many booths and bands along the cheerful street to behold, gifted artists were sitting on the ground using chalk to draw different themed pictures on the newly paved street. On the pavement I admired many large drawings which included, landscape, a mermaid, and flowers. The colors were bright and vibrant. Lovely. Happiness was in the air. As I walked down the center of the street I appreciated being surrounded by the artistic world of musicians and artists. I had not realized that my own creativity as a writer had been running on empty simply because I was not filling my soul back up with any of my love of plays, music or art. I even passed on a opportunity to listen to chamber music earlier in the week. Also, my awesome stereo seemed to have blown a fuse or something and I still had not taken it to be fixed. Being someone who must listen to all types of music, every day, this is like driving cross county with out a spare tire in my trunk, it is asking for trouble, taking a risk, asking for spiritual discord. A different type of chalk drawing on the street caught my eye and made me suddenly stop walking. I had no idea what it meant, but I loved it. Only two colors were used – black and white. The background was white and the rest was only black musical notes as if it was a gigantic piece of sheet music just waiting for a musician to bring it to life. To me, the notes looked complex. The top of the page read, “3PM Sunday”. My imagination filled with many thoughts as to what this could mean. What is the plan for 3PM Sunday?! Rehearsal? Church, and this song will be sung? Or, perhaps 3PM is the time two lovers will meet and they have a song in their hearts? I stood, admired, and took in all the ideas the musical note drawing could possibly mean to me. Others started to gather around me as well and they stood and looked over the music with “3PM Sunday” written at the top. I enjoyed watching the thoughtful expressions on their faces as I tried to overhear as they spoke softly among themselves while they guessed what it could all mean. What is this message? I have a friend who can read music and I suddenly felt compelled to take a picture of it and send it to him on his cell phone so he could solve the musical riddle for us earth people. I thought to myself how all the people around me would get such a kick if I could find out what the musical notes were trying to say to all of us. My thought vanished as a little girl with a purple ribbon in her hair came running up to the black and white drawing. She suddenly halted as she caught her balance just in time to not step on the drawing while she loudly and gleefully exclaimed with a big smile:
“Look at the song!!”
When I heard that wise description of the drawing – I understood and smiled.
